God’s Foundation Is Collapse-Free

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  25; Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.”

Matthew 7:24-25(NLT)

Understanding God’s Word is a beautiful thing. It brings light to every situation we could possibly encounter. He’s given us His Word so that we can know Him and know His ways. Why is this important? It’s important because our whole reason for being on earth is to imitate Him and follow Him through the example of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul said in 1Corinthians 3:10-11(NKJV), “10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.Jesus Christ laid the foundation, and Paul built upon it. This is a pattern for us, especially when it comes to relationships and marriage.

The foundation that Jesus Christ built is collapse-free. He made this abundantly clear in Matthew 7:24-25. You and I are not capable of building a foundation that supports the kind of blessed existence we desire. It’s just not possible or available for us to do this. Our responsibility as citizens of heaven and dwellers on earth is to build upon the foundation Christ laid and to do it masterfully.

Amos 3:3(NLT) asks a fundamental question, Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” This question is especially important to significant relationships, because this is the function of partnership. Marriage is two people, ordained of God, coming together for the purpose of walking together through life. We make it so much more complicated than this, but God never intended it to be. The goal of any couple that is seeking to get married should be to build a solid Christian marriage that will last. To do this, Jesus Christ must be the head of their lives and their unions.

Most of us understand that when two people come together in a relationship, they endure some tough times. Keeping it real, there may be times when they don’t even like each other very much and may question why they ever got married. During those seasons, they will need to lean heavily on the foundation of Jesus Christ to sustain their unions. God is the One that ordains the coming together of two individuals, and when at least one of the partners in the marital union has utter faith in this, the Lord Jesus can move powerfully in that marriage.

Our current environment reflects how the plots and tricks of the enemy have torn many marriages and relationships apart. The reason for this is because they lack faith in the foundation of Jesus Christ. They don’t know enough about the nature, power, and love of God. Our Heavenly Father wants us to understand deeply that this shouldn’t be the case with two spiritually mature individuals. The Word of God is the foundation of Christ, and this is the foundation upon which any relationship can last. If this is the kind of marriage we decide, we must have God’s Word firmly cemented in our hearts and minds.

Jesus Christ asked in Luke 6:46(NLT), why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?” This is the question for us today. So many of our issues would be resolved if we just understood the truth and followed it, and this is what Jesus Christ is expressing. Some of us are praying fervently for a good spouse, but if the future husband came today, would we be able to spiritually maintain the blessing? Would we hold to God’s truth with all that we are, or would we allow the relationship to collapse from the stresses of the world? We have a choice in the matter, and it is to build our marriages on God’s foundation, because it is collapse free. Make the commitment to learn all you can about Him. Put on His nature and the love of Christ will be the foundation of your life, your marriage, and everything you attempt to do. ■
